On every 10th of Zill-Hajj Muslims all across the globe observe Eid-ul-Azha. Eid-ul-Azha is the religious festival of Muslims. On that day Muslims sacrifice nominated animals like cows, buffaloes, bulls, sheep, goats, camels and lambs. They do so to recall the sacrifice of Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S) and also it is mandatory in Islam.
There are some rules to be followed before selecting the animal to be sacrificed. Some rules are also set to be followed while slaughtering the animal. Before selecting the animal that you want to sacrifice please make sure to check the following things.
How to Select the Animal
Goat
If you a goat to sacrifice then make sure that its age is one year or more and has at least two teeth.
Cow, Buffalo and Bull
The above mentioned animals must have two teeth and their age must be two years or more.
Camel
The age of camel must be five years to twelve years.
Lamb
Minimum age of lamb to be sacrificed is six months.
Some General Instructions
Now there are some general instructions to take care of while selecting the animal.
The animal must not be ill and there must not be any kind of disease attached to that animal. Blind animals are not allowed to be sacrificed.
Animals who are lame and so weak like their bones are visible and they have no marrow in their bones are not allowed to be slaughtered. Animals with one eye or broken horns or with any kind of disability can’t be sacrificed.
Precautions while Slaughtering
Please make sure that the butcher you have hired is Muslim and is having proper ablution. Attention must be paid not to harm the animal.
Pushing, shoving, and beating animals while slaughtering is not allowed. The animal must be slaughtered with a sharp knife and in a fast way so that the pain of slaughtering is minimized. Cut the throat, windpipe and jugular vein but don’t cut the spinal cord. Keep on reciting Takbeer while slaughtering.
