With his first-half goal and Kylian Mbappe’s second-half double, France defeated Poland 3-1 to go to the quarterfinals and set a new record for men’s goals scored.

Giroud’s first-half goal (44) helped propel Les Bleus to a last-16 victory in Doha and set up a quarterfinal match against England on Saturday at 7 p.m. with his 52nd goal for France, breaking Thierry Henry’s record.

The 36-year-old broke the mark in his 117th appearance for France. He had previously tied Henry’s record of 51 goals after scoring twice in their opening Group D victory over Australia.

Mbappe added a second goal for France in the 74th minute, and he added a brilliant third goal in extra time to give France a total of five goals in Qatar, two more than any other player in the competition.In order to prevent Hugo Lloris from keeping a clean sheet in his record-tying 142nd appearance for France, Robert Lewandowski netted a retaken penalty in the 99th minute to give Poland a late consolation.
