Top Underdog Teams to watch at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022

The FIFA World Cup 2022 has kickstarted with some very unexpected results. While many will likely tune in to see the global superstars like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, but everyone loves a good underdog story. With the competition being set in the winters, and for the first time it is going to be held in an Arabian Peninsula called Qatar, anything can happen. One such result has been the emergence of a Saudi Arabia win over Argentina in their opening match. With the way things are going, one cannot write off any underdog team when they can easily break the norm and make history. Just like Saudi Arabia broke Argentina’s 36 win unbeaten run at the 2022 World Cup.

Following is a list of underdog team at the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 which could upset the top dogs of the tournament:

  1. Uruguay

    Uruguay

Uruguay is one of those teams that makes a deep run in the tournament but always manages to get knocked out when they reach the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup. With their two ageing strikers of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, a new young striker in the form of Darwin Nunez has come forward who had been scoring goals for fun for his former club Benfica before his lucrative and expensive transfer to Liverpool FC. He struggled for a few games but has picked up his goal scoring form. If he can transfer the same goal scoring form for his country then the oppositions defence will be in trouble.

For the midfield, Uruguay has Tottenham’s in-form midfielder whom they purchased on a bargain – Rodrigo Bentancur and Real Madrid’s jewel Fede Valverde and an iron wall defence in the line of Diego Godin. Uruguay has the ability to go head to head with any top dog and give them a run for their money at FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

  2. South Korea

    South Korea

Among Asian countries, South Korea has played the most out of any countries. They made their debut in the World Cup as far back as in 1954. Even before Brazil won their first FIFA World Cup. Many people under-appreciate South Korea but they forget one of the top goal scorers in the Premier League, Son Heung-min plays as the striker for the nation. Some bookmakers rate Japan to win the 2022 World Cup, but the last time people under-appreciated South Korea, Germany got knocked out of the competition by South Korea to a 2-0 loss in Russia.

  3. Canada

    Canada

Nobody expected the Canadian national football team to top the CONCACAF standings. As a result, they qualified for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for the first time. Their rankings were well in the 50s a year ago but now they are the 38th best team in the world as of June 2022. Due to a-lot of high profile players such as Alphonso Davies in the Canadian team, they are participating for the first time in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022.

  4. The United States of America

    United States of America

USA were one of the teams noticed in the Russian edition of the World Cup in 2018 along with Netherlands and Italy who did not qualify for the FIFA World Cup. They are placed in Group B along with Iran, Wales and England. They are considered the underdogs of the group since most of the world does not see USA as a threat when it comes to football. Wales and England appear to be the top dogs of the group. USA also has the likes of Christian Pulisic up top to score the decisive goals and help USA get past the group stage into the knockout stage of the football world cup 2022.

  5. Denmark

    Denmark

Denmark has been the dark horse of the world cup. When people least expect Denmark to win, they pull a rabbit out of their hat and push through the tournament. Like last time, Denmark almost reached the quarter-finals, but Croatia booked their place in the later stages with a 3-2 shootout victory against Denmark. According to official FIFA Rankings, Denmark is in 10th position. With a midfield that consists of Christian Eriksen and other highly talented technical players, Denmark is going to cause shockwaves in the FIFA World Cup 2022.
