The 2022 World Cup is set to begin on November 20th, 2022 in Qatar and ending on December 18th, 2022. It will be the first time the World Cup will take place in the winter season. Last World Cup had an audience of 3 billion people but this edition is to exceed the 5 billion viewership. FIFA World Cup 2022 will probably be the last tournament of global super stars to the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Neymar, Edinson Cavani but there are other top players who could not compete in the prestigious tournament because of injury concerns.
Following list contains 11 players who are out of the World Cup due to injury concerns.
-
N’golo Kante
Kante is a different type of footballer with a different set of DNA built inside him. While other players need to surround themselves with different players to help them running the midfield, Kante can run the midfield alone – literally. He has an endless stamina and is a built in tank in the midfield for Chelsea as well as France. He featured in all of France matches in the 2018 World Cup, even competed in the finals beating Croatia 4-2.
-
Paul Pogba
Paul Pogba has faced heavy criticism over the years of not justifying his hefty price tag of his £89 million move from Juventus to Manchester United. He moved to Juventus on a free transfer but has yet to make a single appearance for the club due to picking up injuries. During his injury rehab, he picked up another knee injury which is going to see Pogba miss the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He was part of the squad that beat Croatia 4-2 by scoring a goal in the 59th minute. France are also one of the favourites to reach the world cup final 2022 and they could use Pogba’s unpredictability around the opposition’s box.
-
Reece James
Reece James turned every footballer dreams to represent their country in the World Cup in a reality. After a win against AC Milan, he picked up a knee injury which resulted him getting ruled out of playing for two months. Given that the World Cup was a month away at the time of his injury, it was obvious that Reece James would not be participating as he would have to undergo surgery as well as give time for rehabilitation.
-
Diogo Jota
Liverpool acquired Jota’s contract after witnessing his talent when he was under contract at Wolverhampton Wanderers for £45 million. Over the course of the season, Diogo Jota has scored a-lot goals for his club in the two seasons he was at the club. But, he suffered a serious calf injury when Liverpool played against Manchester City at their home ground which ruled him out of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. He was set to appear in his first World Cup to play an important role alongside the likes of Bernardo Silva, Cristiano Ronaldo and among other superstars. He is set to be out of the club and national side till the end of the year as his recovery process has begun.
-
Alexander Isak
Newcastle United has been on an overhaul of their football team as they brought the Swedish forward from Real Sociedad from a fee of upto $67 million. But, since his high profile move he has only made 3 appearances for his club. His progress and impact has been halted because of a thigh injury but on his debut he scored against Liverpool FC. He encountered the injury during international duty which rules him out for two months.
-
Pedro Neto
Pedro Neto is a magician for his club Wolverhampton Wanderers and has displayed his flair in the Premier League plethora of times. Just like Diogo Jota, he was set to appear for his first World Cup but an injury during the match against West Ham saw him writher in pain. Neto suffered an ankle injury and as recommended by the doctors will see him go in surgery and rehabilitation. Portugal needed players like Pedro Neto for their successful run in this year’s World Cup. Their best run came in 1966 when they finished third. Even with the service of Cristiano Ronaldo, Portugal only reached the Round of 16 back in 2018 of the World Cup. The exclusion of Neto due to his injury is surely going to affect their chances of advancing in the World Cup.
-
Paulo Dybala
Paulo Dybala has played many seasons at Juventus but his last season was a disappointing one as his performance kept on falling from the standards he set himself at. However Jose Mourinho, AS Roma’s pushed to sign the highly talented Argentinian and the fans certainly gave a grand welcome to Paulo Dybala. He seem to be picking up his form as he enters his prime by scoring five goals and assisting two in his eight appearances for the club. Roma has also qualified for the Europa League in which Dybala has scored twice in his three appearances for the club. Dybala was surely going to get selected to partner up with Lionel Messi in the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 for their chances to lift the trophy. But, in his game against Leece he suffered an injury of a tear in the quads which has now ruled Dybala out for 4-8 weeks. Argentina squad is going to miss the creative talent of Paulo Dybala.
-
Kyle Walker
England has been blessed with a-lot highly talented players that are capable of winning the World Cup. However, one of the major injury prone position in England’s squad is the right back position. Gareth Southgate’s number one choice for the right back position Kyle Walker is ruled out with a groin injury as he was a vital player in his plans. Two of England’s best right backs are out of the tournament thinning the squad at the right back position. His position has now been taken by Kieran Trippier.
-
Kalvin Phillips
Kalvin Phillips has a race against time to get fit for the FIFA World Cup. The major culprit to his fitness is not enough game time for Manchester City. He has only played a couple of minutes under the manager but has yet to start for Manchester City. Kalvin used to be a regular starter for his former club Leeds United but has been constantly warming the bench since his joining. He is currently facing a shoulder injury which should see him skip this year’s World Cup.
-
Raphel Varane
Manchester United performed well in an important match against their rivals Chelsea FC, but Raphael Varane suffered an ankle injury whilst attempting to intercept the ball. The backline of Manchester United as well as France will suffer because of his tower-like presence in the defence. France will feel his absence in the defence as well as his counterpart N’golo Kante. He was crucial for France’s success of world cup qualification and could have provided a more solid structure at the back.
